Champion Volleyball Player Kerri Walsh Returns to Sport

U.S. volleyball player and Olympic champion Kerri Walsh gave birth to a son, Joey, only three months ago and has already returned to the sport.

Walsh, 30, won a gold medal at the Beijing games, though she’s not currently sure if she’ll be participating in the 2012 London Olympics – focusing on another child might be her game plan. Husband Casey Jennings is also a pro volleyball player.

New Sports Okayed for 2016 Summer Olympics

The IOC has approved the addition of golf and rugby for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Sports that were not approved include baseball, softball, squash, karate and roller sports. Each sport was accepted or rejected by a 15-member board via secret ballot. (Note: Golf was part of the 1900 and 1904 Games.)

Michael Vick Signs With Philly Eagles

ESPN is reporting that the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles have signed Michael Vick to a two-year contract. The quarterback spent 18 months of his sentence for multiple charges related to a dogfighting ring. Vick, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, hasn’t played since 2006 and will not be fully reinstated to the NFL until week six of the 2009-10 season. His new deal offers him $1.6M for the first year and “an option for the second year at $5.2M,” plus potential incentives of $3M.

United Arab Emirates to Host 33rd America’s Cup Sailing Race

The 33rd America’s Cup sailing competition will be held in the United Arab Emirates in February 2010. The defending champions, SNG (Societe Nautique de Geneve), have selected the venue. There is opposition to this venue from the BMW-Oracle, who are already in legal dispute with SNG. Both teams will appear in a New York court in August.

Eli Manning Now NFL’s Richest Player?

The Washington Post reports that the New York Giants have given QB Eli Manning a six-year extension on his contract worth nearly $100M. Manning is being guaranteed about $35M. His current contract of $45M for six years has a season left, and with a combination of the new contract, his average earnings per season come to over $15M. [Note: this contract extension has not been officially announced.]

Tiger Woods Rises In 2009 Buick Open Second Round

Tiger Woods has finished up at -9 for the day, on the 2nd round of the 2009 Buick Open – recovering from a poor first day. This puts him at -10 overall, two strokes short of leader Michael Letzig. The Buick Open is being played in at the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan.

SF Giants Get Sanchez in Return for Pirates’ Alderson

The San Fransisco Giants have picked up second baseman Freddy Sanchez from the Pittsburgh Pirates in return for trading minor-league pitcher Tim Alderson. Sanchez is currently nursing an inflamed knee and may sit out the rest of this week.

In addition to trading Sanchez, the Pirates also had a seven-player deal with the Seattle Mariners.

Cleveland Indians Trade Cliff Lee to the Phillies

Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians – and defending American League Cy Young Award winner, was awaiting confirmation this morning of his alleged trade to the Philadelphia Phillies. However, the latest reports (LA Times) indicate that Lee has in fact been sent to the Phillies, along with outfielder Ben Fransisco. The Indians get four minor league prospects in return. the prospects include Carlos Carrasco and Jason Knapp. The Indians earlier decided that Toronto Blue Jay’s Roy Halladay was too expensive and stopped pursuing him.

NFL’s Philly Eagles’ Jim Johnson Dies

NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles lost their defensive coordinator, Jim Johnson, to cancer yesterday, at the age of 68. Johnson, who had battled cancer before, had to give up his position when his melanoma returned, spreading to his spine.

Johnson, a 20+ year veteran of the NFL, leaves behind his wife, two children, and four grandchildren.

Alberto Contador Wins 2009 Tour de France Cycle Race

Alberto Contador of Spain has won the 107th Tour de France (2009) cycling race. Contador also won in 2007. Spain has won for the last four years (2006-9). America’s Lance Armstrong, a seven-time winner, came in third this year and is a favorite for the 2010 competition. Andy Schleck came in second.
