Consumers trading in a car getting less than 18 mpg could get up to a $4500 rebate applied directly to the purchase of a new qualifying car. The CARS program recently received an additional $2B in funds, though vouchers are still limited and various reports say that dealers are frustrated with the way the program is being handled. Check with participating dealers for details.

Bloomberg is reporting that the U.S. House approved today a measure to add $2B to the Cash for Clunkers CARS rebate program. Rebates of up to $4500 are being offered to consumers – through particpating dealerships – on the purchase of qualifying new cars when their old ones are traded in and crushed. The rebates are given directly dealers, once they’ve proven a traded vehicle has been crushed.

That said, one of the NY Times blogs suggests that many dealerships are frustrated, especially because they cannot access the website where deals have to be registered.

The program was to run until the end of Oct 2009, and some media outlets are reporting that it is being suspended. However, word from the White House is that the program is not being suspended, and more rebate cash will hopefully be allocated. House and Senate will be voting soon on adding as much as $2B to the pot.

The program is intended to boost the badly damaged auto industry, and might also spark U.S. economic recovery.

The CARS/ “Cash for Clunkers”/ “Car Allowance Rebate System” (officially called the “Consumer Assistance Recycle and Save Act of 2009″) program offers a rebate of up to US$4500 for consumers purchasing a new car who also give up their current vehicle getting less than 18mpg. The base rebate is $3500, if the new car gets at least 22mpg and costs $45K or less. If there’s a larger increase in mpg between old and new car, the rebate could be as high as $4500.

Dealers will receive rebates directly, after providing proof that a vehicle has been permanently disabled (i.e., crushed or shredded). Note that there are only about a 1/4 million vouchers at present, totalling over $1B in rebates. Qualifications vary based on whether you are purchasing a passenger car, truck or SUV. Check with your car dealer for details, but ask ‘qualification’ questions before you start signing paperwork.
