Cleveland Browns’ Stallworth Suspended for 2009 Without Pay

The NY Times is reporting that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth. Stallworth is suspended for the entire 2009 season without pay and will not return until after the 2010 Super Bowl. This suspension is due to Stallworth’s conviction of DUI, manslaughter and other charges, after he killed a pedestrian while driving drunk, the day after he received a multi-million dollar bonus.

Because the pedestrian was not using a crosswalk at the time, Stallworth received a lighter sentence of less than a month in prison, plus suspension of his driver’s license and other requirements. Stallworth also reached a private settlement with the victim’s family. As part of Stallworth’s suspension, he loses the remainder of his 2009 contract, totalling nearly $750K. Stallworth signed a 7-year contract for $35M in 2008.

Chicago Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane Arrested

Chicago Blackhawks’ winger Patrick Kane, 20, and his cousin James Kane, 21, were arrested in Buffalo, NY, for allegedly assaulting a cab driver. According to reports, the cabbie did not have change for the $15 the men paid for their $13.80 cab fare. Angered, they allegedly took their money back and punched the cabbie in his face and head. The cabbie’s eyeglasses were damaged and he sustained cuts to his face.

The charges to the Kanes were second degree robbery, criminal mischief, theft of services. They have already entered a not guilty plea via an attorney. Patrick Kane won the Calder Trophy in 2008, selected as the NHL’s best rookie that year.

Half-Day Prison Riot Leaves Hundreds Injured

A riot in Chino, California, at the California Institute for Men has left over 250 inmates injured. Over 50 inmates were hospitalized. The riot started Saturday night at a reception center. Guards used pepper spray to reduce the use of lethal force. One housing uniit caught fire, and inmates sustained slashes, stab wounds and head trauma.

Online Weapons Dealer Sold Guns to 3 Mass Killers

TGSCOM Inc., an online weapons dealer based in Green Bay, is defending itself in regards to some of the notorious mass killers who have purchased guns from them. This includes: George Sodini, who this week killed several people and himself in a Pittsburgh area LA Fitness; Seung-Hui Cho, who killed 32 at Virginia Tech in 2007; and Stephen Kazmierczak, who killed five people and himself in a classroom in 2008.

TGSCOM spokesman Eric Thompson says the weapons could have been easily found at a number of large department stores. Sodini may or may not have used TGSCOM-bought guns in his attack.

Man in LA Fitness Shooting Had 4 Guns, No Ties to Victims

George Sodini, who killed at least three people and then himself at an LA Fitness gym near Pittsburgh, had no connection to the deceased nor to the multiple people injured. He entered the club with four guns – three of which were used – and even indicated his plans on his own web page. Sodini was apparently distraught over his belief that women didn’t like him. The complaints on his web page indicated that he had been celibate for nearly 20 years and he seemed to resent all the 20-something couples he saw. [Note: we had earlier reported six dead in this rampage due to inconsistent reports elsewhere.]

6 Dead in LA Fitness Shooting Near Pittsburgh

As many as 16 people were shot at by man who entered an LA Fitness Gym in Bridgeville, Penn (near Pittsburgh) today. The man turned off the lights on a Latin dance class in session before he started shooting. At this point, most reports claim between 5-6 people are dead, including the shooter, who apparently committed suicide.

Rodell Vereen Caught Having Horse Sex for Second Time

There’s no accounting for some people’s tastes. According to police reports, 50 year old Rodell Vereen of Horry (not ‘Horny’) County, South Carolina, was caught having sex with a horse. The owner, Barbara Kenley, caught him on video as well as in the act. Vereen had already pleaded guilty in 2008 to sex with the same horse. Supposedly, the Kenley had him at gunpoint and had considered shooting him. Vereen had previously been treated for mental problems after a court order, according to his brother Rev. James Vereen.

Rabbis and Hoboken Mayor Cammarano Arrested

Peter Cammarano III, Mayor of Hoboken, NJ, and two other New Jersey mayors were taken in to custody by FBI agents, along with several rabbis. In total, over 30 people were arrested in a widespread corruption scandal, which includes money laundering. Other reports indicate as many as 44 people were arrested.

Cammarano just won a runoff election in June 2009 and was only in office for about three weeks. The other mayors arrested were Dennis Elwell of Seacaucus and Daniel Van Pelt of Ocean Township. Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini of Jersey City was arrested as well. The five rabbis arrested represented both NJ and NY synagoguges.

The raids took place in dozens of locations and were conduct by hundreds of agents.
