U.S. volleyball player and Olympic champion Kerri Walsh gave birth to a son, Joey, only three months ago and has already returned to the sport.

Walsh, 30, won a gold medal at the Beijing games, though she’s not currently sure if she’ll be participating in the 2012 London Olympics – focusing on another child might be her game plan. Husband Casey Jennings is also a pro volleyball player.

Senator Ted Kennedy Passes Away at 77

U.S. Senator Ted (Edward M.) Kennedy – known as the “Liberal Lion”, and youngest brother of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Bobby (Robert F.) Kennedy – has just passed away in Massachusetts from his fight with brain cancer. This death is roughly two weeks after his sister Eunice Shriver Kennedy passed away at 88.

Senator Kennedy has been a long-term senator and recently an active supporter of President Barack Obama as well as healthcare reform. President Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom this month. His death leaves only one remaining sibling from the legendary Kennedy clan – the Senator’s older sister Jean Kennedy.

Paul McCartney Piedmont Park Concert in Atlanta

Baby you can drive my car, but not to Piedmont Park. Sir Paul McCartney is performing in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park today, as part of the its 20th anniversary. This will be McCartney’s first outdoor concert in over 40 years, and it’ll be a “green” one. That is, there’ll be no parking for the event. MARTA trains will be one way to get there, but this still involves walking. Music starts at 7pm local time.

Tropical Storm Ana Heading for West Indies

Tropical Storm Ana is the first named storm of the season for the Atlantic Ocean, and it’s heading for the West Indies. It’s currently heading west and could pick up strength on the way by Monday, as it heads towards Haiti, Puerto Rico and Florida – at which point it might be a hurricane.

Newly Discovered Planet WASP-17 Orbits Backwards

Scientists who are a part of WASP (Wide Area Search for Planets) have just discovered a new planet, WASP-17. Don’t get your hopes up about any life there. WASP-17 might be twice the size of Jupiter (but half the mass) – making it the largest known planet – but it’s a thousand light-years distant from us, orbits backwards – possibly due to a near-collision.

WASP-17 is given its name because it’s the 17th planet outside our solar system that’s been found by the WASP project. Another extrasolar planet, HAT P-7, was recently discovered on a test run of NASA’s Kepler space telescope. HAT P-7, which is about the size of Jupiter and has a “yearly” orbit of just over 2 Earth days, is so close to its sun that the sun-side could be 3000-3500 F more than the opposite side. (Being “tidally locked,” according to Science Daily, one side of the planet is always facing its sun.)

Character Actor John Quade Passes Away at 71

Actor John Quade died this past Sun Aug 9, apparently of natural of causes. The 71 year-old actor is probably best known for the villains he played in various Clint Eastwood films. He also made appearances in dozens of popular TV shows starting from Gunsmoke in 1971 to Lonesome Dove in 1993.

New Sports Okayed for 2016 Summer Olympics

The IOC has approved the addition of golf and rugby for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Sports that were not approved include baseball, softball, squash, karate and roller sports. Each sport was accepted or rejected by a 15-member board via secret ballot. (Note: Golf was part of the 1900 and 1904 Games.)

Michael Vick Signs With Philly Eagles

ESPN is reporting that the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles have signed Michael Vick to a two-year contract. The quarterback spent 18 months of his sentence for multiple charges related to a dogfighting ring. Vick, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, hasn’t played since 2006 and will not be fully reinstated to the NFL until week six of the 2009-10 season. His new deal offers him $1.6M for the first year and “an option for the second year at $5.2M,” plus potential incentives of $3M.

Cleveland Browns’ Stallworth Suspended for 2009 Without Pay

The NY Times is reporting that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth. Stallworth is suspended for the entire 2009 season without pay and will not return until after the 2010 Super Bowl. This suspension is due to Stallworth’s conviction of DUI, manslaughter and other charges, after he killed a pedestrian while driving drunk, the day after he received a multi-million dollar bonus.

Because the pedestrian was not using a crosswalk at the time, Stallworth received a lighter sentence of less than a month in prison, plus suspension of his driver’s license and other requirements. Stallworth also reached a private settlement with the victim’s family. As part of Stallworth’s suspension, he loses the remainder of his 2009 contract, totalling nearly $750K. Stallworth signed a 7-year contract for $35M in 2008.
