Fox News reported earlier today that a 20ft long basking shark washed ashore on New York’s Long Island beach.
Basking sharks, which are sometimes seen in that area, offshore, can grow to 40+ feet and are said to be the second largest sharks. (Only whale sharks are larger.) Despite being mistaken on occasion for Great Whites, Basking sharks’ teeth are much smaller, and they are “filter feeders” who feed on plankton, and are not any danger to humans.
